Thank you to everyone that joined us for SOMM with Wine at The Mockingbird on Friday night. As promised, here are all the wines and our gallery.
We've been trying to bring this movie to the big screen in Birmingham for some years and we hugely grateful to Jason Wise, Jackson Myers and the team for working with us to make it happen. Based on the feedback we have received, it was definitely worth it, with many of the audience feeling quite emotional about the experience and some seasoned The Wine Events Company regulars saying this was their favourite ever 'movie with wine'.
And of course, the evening would not have been the same without our very own Master Sommelier, Wales finest (and only), Nigel Wilkinson MS. You will all now know why I am such a fan of Nige, and yes, he really is that much of a nice guy. It was remiss of me to not reveal Nigel's lunch of choice, read on for the answer to that cliffhanger.
Somm with Wine .. the Wines
Alasia Brut Rose 2019, Alta Langa – Italy from £14.49
Alasia Rose Brut, Alta Langa is an elegant pink sparkler from the foothills of Piemonte. Part of the small but growing traditional Alta Langa appellation - a delightful metodo classico rose produced solely from Pinot Noir.
Inspired by talk of the Clare Valley Riesling in the movie, just 45 mins drive from where this dry, fresh Eden Valley Riesling is produced.
Available locally at Vine and Bine in Solihull. A floral nose of jasmine, lime zest, waxed lemons over crushed marble. The palate is bright, taut and citrussy, the note of citrus oils adding to the palate weight.
We hope we served this rosé COLD!! A Cape rosé that's evocative of the finest examples from Provence, with its delicate pink hue and aromas of pomegranate, raspberry, and a touch of flinty minerality. Crafted entirely from Mourvèdre, like the revered wines of Bandol, it exudes finesse and elegance.
Named after Stéphane’s father when, in 1989, he became a grandfather or ‘Papy’, this wine has been lovingly created from a selection of the best grapes. The purity of Northern Rhône Syrah and the delicate perfume of violets shine through. A nuanced and refined bottle to relax into and discuss, this is a grown-up wine and a beautifully balanced old-vine Syrah, the classic pairing is roast rack of lamb and mature hard cheeses.
Aromas of bramble fruit with spice and lightly floral notes. On the palate plum and blackberry fruit flavours combine with ample acidity, minerality and earthy notes. It has a fine structure, and supple tannins give elegance and length.
The Tempranillo is sourced from La Pasada, and the Graciano from La Montesa vineyard. After a long maceration the wine spends 12 months in 60% American and 40% French oak (both used and new), followed by 24 months in bottle.
